Sagittarius A*: the black hole at the centre of the galaxy

Sagittarius A* weighs about 4 million Suns and its first image came out in 2022. It is the end of Orbit's route. Facts with their sources.

Curious facts

  1. 4 million Suns

It has about 4 million times the mass of the Sun and lies about 27,000 light years away, at the centre of our galaxy. 1

  2. Its first image, in 2022

On 12 May 2022 the Event Horizon Telescope, which links radio telescopes across the planet, released its first image: a dark shadow inside a ring of bright gas. 1

  3. Too far even for Voyager

Voyager 1, the spacecraft that has travelled farthest, cruises at about 61,000 km/h. At that speed, if it were heading that way, it would take almost 500 million years to get there. That is my own sum, from NASA’s figures. 2

Sagittarius A* in Orbit

In the game, Sagittarius A* is jump 100 of the route, 27,000 light years from Earth. Its logbook card says:

Logbook · Jump 100

4 million Suns; first imaged by the EHT in 2022

I want to try Orbit Already in the group: download

Two steps with the Google account you use on Play: join the group, then download the test. Google Play can take a while, sometimes more than an hour, before it lets you download it; if you see “Item not found”, wait and try again.
