Titan: a moon where you could fly

Titan has methane seas and air so dense that with wings on your arms you could fly. Facts with their sources, Huygens and Dragonfly.

Curious facts

  1. Lakes and seas of methane

It is the only place besides Earth known to have liquids on its surface. It has clouds, rain, rivers, lakes and seas, but not of water: they are hydrocarbons such as methane and ethane. 1

  2. A 1,200 km sea

Its largest sea, Kraken Mare, stretches about 1,200 km. At −179 °C, water ice plays the role of rock there. 23

  3. You could fly with wings

Its air is about four times denser than Earth’s and you would weigh about seven times less there. That is why a NASA scientist explains that, with wings strapped to your arms, you could flap them like a bird and take off. 45

  4. The most distant landing

On 14 January 2005 ESA’s Huygens probe touched down on Titan. It is still the most distant landing from Earth ever made. 67

  5. A drone the size of a car

NASA is building Dragonfly, an octocopter about the size of a small car. It will launch in 2028, no earlier than July, and reach Titan in late 2034. 8
