Curious facts about Earth with their sources: oceans on the surface, 44 tonnes of space dust a day and a mini-moon in 2024.

Oceans in plain sight, and others hidden
It is the only known world with life and with oceans of liquid water on its surface. It is not the only one with liquid water: Europa, Enceladus and Ganymede hide oceans under their ice, and NASA calls them ocean worlds. 1

44 tonnes fall on it every day
Every day about 44 tonnes of meteoritic material fall on Earth. Most of the comet debris behind meteor showers is between the size of a grain of sand and a pea. 2

A mini-moon in 2024
From 29 September to 25 November 2024 the small asteroid 2024 PT5 travelled with Earth as a “mini-moon”, though it never completed a full loop around it. Its light looks like that of lunar rocks: it may be a piece of the Moon. 34
