Neptune: the fastest winds in the Solar System

Neptune has winds of over 2,000 km/h and a large moon that orbits backwards and may one day break up. Curious facts with their sources.

Curious facts

  1. Winds over 2,000 km/h

On Neptune the wind blows at more than 2,000 km/h. That is three times stronger than Jupiter’s winds and nine times stronger than the worst storms on Earth. 1

  2. A moon that goes backwards

Triton, its large moon, is the only one in the Solar System that orbits its planet in the opposite direction to the planet’s spin. Most likely Neptune captured it from the Kuiper Belt. 2

  3. And one day it may break it

Because it goes backwards, tides slow Triton down and bring it closer to Neptune. According to a 1989 model, in about 3.6 billion years the planet’s gravity would break it apart, possibly into a ring. 3

Neptune in Orbit

In the game, Neptune is jump 35 of the route, 4,370 M km from Earth. Its logbook card says:
